Top Workplace 2017: Crew Carwash
Employees get more than a clean car as a perk of working at Crew Carwash, which was named a Top Workplace for the second consecutive year and the No. 2 large company in 2017.
Of course, a clean car is part of the working arrangement: Hourly wash associates get two free car washes per biweekly pay period. But when employees talk about their work experience at Crew, what really bubbles up is that their hard work is appreciated and recognized.
Employees say their input is valued by management. Crew received a special Top Workplace award recognizing that new ideas are encouraged at the company.
Those who work at Crew say the vibe is upbeat and collegial. “It’s a fun environment to be in, and you make friends,” said Jonathan Carnagua, an associate at Crew’s Glendale location on Keystone Avenue.
The part-time employee, who was preparing to graduate from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis this spring, lauded the company’s flexibility in helping employees accommodate a work-school balance.
Nico Mills, a full-time associate who works at a Crew location in Greenwood, added that the company is similarly family-friendly in its scheduling, working with him to ensure he’s able to take time off to accompany his wife to prenatal visits.
“I need the flexibility because I’m about to have a kid,” Mills said. “So (for) those appointments, I really want to be there.”
For college students who work 20 hours or more a week and maintain C grades or better, Crew also provides education assistance of up to $2,500 annually, or $1,250 per semester. That’s something Liz Riggin, who will be a sophomore at IUPUI this fall took advantage of for her most recent semester. Employees who earn education assistance also can spend it in whatever way they choose.
“The nice thing is the money doesn’t just go toward tuition. You can use it towards books, or toward room and board,” Riggin said.
